Corrimal Coke Works Set for Heritage Plaza Transformation

March 5, 2026 4:01 pm in by

Plans are on exhibition to transform part of the former Corrimal Coke Works into a new Heritage Plaza, celebrating the site’s rich industrial history while creating a future community hub.

The proposed development at The Works would feature cafes, green lawns, retail and shared workspaces, all centred around preserved and restored heritage elements from the former coke works.

Key features include the original 1912 brick chimney, the adaptive reuse of the powerhouse building, rebuilt coke ovens and retained stacks, along with reinstated rail tracks and interpretive displays highlighting the site’s role in the Illawarra’s coal and steel history.

Design changes to the Development Application include a wider, more pedestrian friendly plaza, improved access for walkers, cyclists and public transport users, and better connections to Corrimal Station.

Developer Legacy Property says honouring the history of the site has been central to the project, with plans to recycle and reinterpret original materials for future generations.

If approved, construction of the Heritage Plaza is expected to begin in 2027, with the DA currently on public exhibition.
