Lake Illawarra detectives have charged two men over their alleged involvement in the manufacturing and supply of ‘slam guns’ in the state’s south.
In April, local detectives commenced Strike Force Alvie to investigate the manufacture and supply of firearms made from adapted materials known as ‘slam guns’.
During the investigation, strike force detectives identified these privately manufactured firearms had been sold several times through the Illawarra.
Police located and seized all the firearms as part of the investigation, including a triple-barrel firearm capable of firing a 12-gauge shotgun shell.
Following extensive investigations, strike force detectives – with assistance from Tactical Operations Unit officers – arrested a 31-year-old man in Albion Park, and a 52-year-old man in Albion Park Rail, yesterday.
Both men were taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.
The 31-year-old was charged with 12 offences, while the 52-year-old man was charged with manufacture prohibited firearm without a permit, as well as intentionally causing fire and being reckless as to its spread.
They both appeared in court today.
