Gas fire at steelworks sees 1 injured, 50 evacuated

Fire crews have spent the afternoon extinguishing the last of 6 gas tanks that caught fire at BlueScope Port Kembla this morning.

10 fire trucks and 40 firefighters were involved in the effort to contain the blaze, with fears the tanks – containing acetylene gas – may explode.

An exclusion zone was established, and thermal imagining cameras deployed to monitor the temperature of the tanks as crews hit them with water streams.

50 workers were evacuated, with one treated for minor burns and ultimately taken to Wollongong Hospital.

The incident is being investigated by Safe Work NSW.
