Wollongong City Council is ramping up efforts to clear large amounts of flood waste, by offering free on-demand waste pickups.

It comes as Minister for the Illawarra and Health Minister Ryan Park applies pressure to councils, with concerns lingering waste could attract vermin.

“The reality is when you see some of these streets it’s house after house after house. What we can’t afford is for that rubbish to sit there for a long period of time. That’s a health concern.”

Both Wollongong and Shellharbour councils have temporarily waived their waste disposal fees at their Dunmore and Whytes Gully waste facilities.

The state government has also waived their waste levy for the disposal of flood waste in the Illawarra-Shoalhaven, which will remain in place until June 30.

Residents with flood waste in the Wollongong City Council area can arrange a pick up with council partner Remondis on 1300 362 360.
