Kiama Council’s been given some more time to fix its finances.
Minister for Local Government Ron Hoenig’s given notice of a proposed extension to the Performance Improvement Order currently imposed on Council, pushing the deadline out by 12 months to the 2027-28 financial year.
“This variation is about giving Council more time to put forward a more measured path to financial sustainability, while minimising the impact on local services, jobs and the community.” Hoenig said.
The move would require Council to continue tackling the deficit through reviewing revenue options, identifying savings, and planning long term solutions for assets like Blue Haven Terralong and local tourist parks.
Kiama Mayor Cameron McDonald has welcomed the proposal.
“Now that we have until 30 June 2028 as the deadline, it means Council will not have to make changes to our community and youth services, our libraries, Kiama Leisure Centre, the Visitor Information Centre and the Pilot’s Cottage Museum,” he said.
Council’s got 14 days to consider the proposal and respond.
Council’s draft 2026-27 Budget is still on public exhibition until 24 May – you can check it out and provide feedback HERE.
