A new Regional Multicultural Centre is set to open in the Illawarra, giving the region’s culturally diverse communities a dedicated place to connect and access support.
The Albanese Government has delivered $5 million to establish the centre in Coniston, which will become the new home of the Multicultural Communities Council of Illawarra (MCCI).
The site will provide shared spaces for community events, training, education and services, with doors expected to open by the end of April.
Federal Member for Cunningham Alison Byrnes said the centre addresses a long standing need.
“Many local multicultural groups struggle to find spaces to hold their community events, and I’m really pleased they will now have a new home,” she said.
MCCI Chair Tom Begic said the investment builds on decades of community support.
“This funding will help us continue supporting multicultural communities for the next 50 years,” he said.
Chief Executive Officer Chris Lacey said the centre will play a key regional role.
“It will become an anchor point for services to the growing multicultural communities of the Illawarra,” he said.
