Warrawong Parklands is set to become a premier waterfront destination, with the Minns Labor Government finalising a master plan to transform the under-utilised foreshore at Lake Illawarra.
The plan re-imagines the 32 hectare parkland as a world class outdoor space, delivering new areas to exercise, play, gather and relax, both on land and on the water.
Proposed features include nearly 10 kilometres of new walking and cycling paths, a 320 metre wetland boardwalk linking the east and west of the park, an Olympic standard skatepark, upgraded sports fields, inclusive playgrounds and nature play spaces.
Improved lake access is also planned, including fishing steps and a new paddleboard and kayak launch, relocated closer to the playground following community feedback.
Flexible spaces for events, outdoor performances and lakeside dining are also included, alongside a strong focus on restoring wetlands and protecting biodiversity.
The project is supported by a $5 million upgrade to the Warrawong seawall, with construction expected to begin soon to improve public access and support marine habitats.
Planning Minister and Member for Wollongong Paul Scully says the master plan delivers on an election commitment to keep the foreshore in public hands, describing Warrawong Parklands as “set to become one of the great public spaces in the state”.
