During the running of race nine at Bulli last night, McCallister sustained injuries as a result of a racing incident.
McCallister was two years old and in his 12th race. A post race veterinary exam revealing compound fractures to both fore legs.
An assessment of the injuries by the on-track veterinarian determined regrettably, McCallister was deemed unsuitable for admission to Greyhound Racing New South Wales’ Greyhound Care Scheme which provides ambulatory, surgical and rehabilitation care for greyhounds injured in any race or trial.
Greyhound racing say these outcomes have reduced by more than 87% since 2017-18, but it is the second incident of its kind after another dog was lost on August 12 at the same race track.
“The financial year 2024-25 saw a 27% decrease in on-track euthanasia from FY 2023-24, the NSW Greyhound Racing industry remains committed to delivering the highest welfare for its canine athletes” GRNSW said.
“As part of the industry’s renewed focus and determination to see ongoing reductions in serious injury rates, it has explored and implemented a range of strategies designed to substantially reduce serious injuries.
“In implementing these strategies, the greyhound racing industry in NSW is committing itself to becoming the world leader in racing safety.
“The success of the industry’s race injury reduction efforts will be monitored and reported to the community by the Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission.”
The Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds speaking out against the incident.
“Four other dogs were injured in the race meeting” the Coalition said.
“More than 100 dogs have been injured at Bulli this year, a third in the most serious injury category (Category D)
“McCallister is the 12th on-track death in NSW this year; another 24 dogs have died after suffering serious injuries in their races. So there has been a total of 36 racing-related deaths in 2025.
“New data from regulator GWIC shows a 58% increase in the total number of greyhounds killed due to racing”
The death follows that of Apple Pie at Bulli on the 12th of August, euthanised after falling and fracturing both forelegs.
It comes as Dapto Greyhounds prepare for their final race meet tomorrow night.
