Retail, fast-food and warehouse workers in Wollongong will today join a new statewide campaign calling for the introduction of a September public holiday, arguing NSW workers are missing out compared to the rest of the country.

The campaign, led by the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association (SDA), is proposing the creation of a new “Family & Community Day” to be held at the start of Spring.

NSW currently has just 11 public holidays – fewer than most other states and territories, most of which have 12 or 13. It is also the only state with just one public holiday between June and December.

SDA NSW/ACT Secretary Bernie Smith said the gap highlights a fairness issue for workers in Wollongong and across the state.
