Two bodies have been located as a part of an investigation to locate two missing fishermen on our South Coast.
About 4pm on Sunday 25 January 2026, Lake Illawarra Police were called to Stafford Street, Gerroa, following reports of a body had washed up.
On Monday 26 January 2026, officers attached to St George Police Area Command began investigations following reports of two men missing from the Blakehurst and Hurstville areas.
Police were told two men – aged 59 and 53 – who were known to each other are believed to frequent the Kiama, Gerringong and Jervis Bay area for rock fishing.
On the same day, officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District established a command post at Black Head Reserve, Gerroa and commenced a search with assistance from Police Rescue, SES, Marine Rescue NSW, Surf Life Saving NSW and Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter.
Initial inquiries have led police to believe that the body found on Sunday 25 January 2026 is that of the missing 53-year-old man.
The search was suspended about 9pm Monday 26 January 2026, and officers from to Marine Area Command, with the assistance from Police Rescue, Surf Life Saving NSW, and Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter, resumed about 6am Tuesday 27 January 2026.
About 2.45pm Tuesday, a body of a man was found north of the Black Head Reserve.
Inquiries alleged the second body is that of the missing 59-year-old man.
