Police have launched a targeted crackdown on e-bikes and e-mobility devices across the Illawarra, issuing 17 infringement notices during an operation focused on Kiama and Albion Park.
The blitz dubbed Operation E-Voltage was carried out by Lake Illawarra Highway Patrol on February 25, with officers stopping 15 e-bikes, one e-scooter and nine bicycles for a range of offences.
Several motorists were also intercepted.
In addition to the infringements, police issued five cautions and spoke with riders about e-bike safety and legal use, with those stopped including both adults and young people.
Police say the operation comes amid a rise in crashes involving e-bikes and e-scooters, some resulting in serious injuries requiring hospital treatment.
Parents are being urged to ensure devices comply with current legislation and have not been illegally modified.
Under NSW law, e-bikes and e-scooters cannot be ridden on roads, footpaths, shared paths or cycleways, and are only permitted on private property.
Police say further enforcement and education operations are likely as e-mobility use continues to grow across the region.
