Measles Alert Issued for Illawarra

March 16, 2026 4:15 pm in by

A measles alert has been issued for the Illawarra, after a confirmed case visited several locations across the region while unknowingly infectious.

The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District says the person had recently returned from South Asia, where measles outbreaks are ongoing.

Exposure sites include Wollongong Hospital, where the person attended the Emergency Department, Medical Assessment Unit and Medical Imaging Unit between Wednesday March 11 and Friday March 13, as well as the EG Ampol service station at Albion Park on March 7 and 8.

Health authorities say the locations do not pose an ongoing risk, but anyone who was there at the listed times should monitor for symptoms.

Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose and sore eyes, usually followed a few days later by a red, blotchy rash that spreads from the head to the rest of the body.

People who become unwell are urged to call ahead before visiting a GP or hospital, to avoid exposing others.

A full list of exposure locations and updated health advice is available on the NSW Health website.
