Mayor Issues Safety Plea After Shellharbour Double Drowning

The Mayor of Shellharbour has spoken out following yesterday’s double drowning tragedy at Shellharbour South Beach, extending his deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the couple who died.

Mayor Chris Homer has also praised the brave community members, lifeguards and emergency crews who rushed to help, saying their swift and selfless actions gave the couple the best possible chance of survival.

In the wake of the tragedy, the Mayor is urging locals and visitors to take extra care around the water, reminding beachgoers to check conditions, swim between the flags and choose patrolled beaches.

“As a former lifeguard, I know conditions can be challenging to assess,” Mayor Homer said, warning that rips and currents aren’t always obvious.

Shellharbour North and Warilla beaches are patrolled seven days a week through to ANZAC Day, swimmers encouraged to make safety a priority so everyone can enjoy the region’s coastline and return home safely.
