Kiama’s novel discovery returned to library, but not shelves

The Kiama community’s right to borrow The Antiquities of Athens has been taken away for good.

An 1858 book on ancient Greek architecture was recently returned to Kiama Library, 150 years after it was due back, following its discovery in a sealed fireplace during a home renovation.

Kiama Libraries Manager Michelle Hudson has confirmed the historic book will no longer be available for loan, with plans for it to be preserved and put on display.

“The library will be the custodian of this special book. We have a duty to keep these little treasures,” she said.

“It will take pride of place in our Local Studies collection.”
