Investigation sparked following suspicious Shellharbour blazes

An investigation is underway into a bushfire in Shellharbour, believed to have been deliberately lit.

The blaze broke out at Blackbutt Forest Reserve early this morning, with strong winds fanning the flames and pushing the fire to within around 80 metres of nearby homes.

Firefighters were able to bring the situation under control, with no properties damaged.

Shellharbour Fire Station Commander Darrin Sullivan says the incident is concerning, particularly given conditions at the time.

“No homes were at risk during this incident, but deliberately lit fires, especially with strong westerly winds, are extremely dangerous. It’s not a good idea at any time,” he said.

The fire follows another blaze near the Warilla Barrack Point Surf Club just hours earlier, keeping crews busy overnight.

Residents are being urged to remain alert and report any suspicious behaviour.

“If you see something, it’s worth reporting it, don’t just ignore it,” Commander Sullivan said.
