The Illawarra Turf Club has been hit with a $200,000 fine after a worker was seriously injured in a fall at Kembla Grange Racecourse.

The penalty was handed down in the NSW District Court following a SafeWork NSW prosecution over an incident in March 2022, when the worker plunged more than five metres through a skylight while working on the roof of the grandstand.

The court heard the Illawarra Turf Club failed to comply with its legal duty under the Work Health and Safety Act, with the organisation pleading guilty to the offence.

SafeWork NSW says falls from heights remain one of the leading causes of serious injury and death in workplaces across the state, reminding businesses they have a clear obligation to protect workers, particularly when working at elevated levels.

The Illawarra Turf Club retains the right to appeal the sentence.
