The latest NSW crime statistics show most major offences in the Illawarra remain stable, but one category is moving in the wrong direction.

The Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research says domestic violence related assault reports are up 12 per cent over the past two years, making it the only major crime category to rise locally.

Executive Director Jackie Fitzgerald says the increase does not necessarily mean more violence is occurring, but may reflect greater reporting and stronger enforcement.

She says hospitalisations and domestic violence related deaths remain stable, while police are recording more breaches of apprehended violence orders and taking more matters to court.

“There are a lot of indicators suggesting this rise is linked to increased enforcement.. and people being more willing to come forward,” Ms Fitzgerald said.

In more positive news, the Illawarra has recorded a 35 per cent drop in youth court proceedings over the same period, now sitting below the state average for youth crime.
