Fresh concerns have been raised about the future of the Illawarra’s steel industry, amid claims Port Kembla could be targeted for an AUKUS submarine base.
Greens Senator David Shoebridge toured the port today alongside South Coast Labour Council Secretary Arthur Rorris and local councillors – warning the scale of the project could put thousands of jobs at risk.
They say a base capable of handling submarines, warships and thousands of US sailors would require significant space, potentially displacing the steelworks.

The State Government, however, insists no work is currently underway.
