Destination Wollongong says the city is increasingly being recognised as a serious contender for major sporting events, amid media speculation about a possible V8 Supercars race in the region.
In a statement, the organisation confirmed it is working closely with Destination NSW and Wollongong City Council to support major event opportunities, while carefully weighing up community impact, logistics and overall value.
While no event has been confirmed, Destination Wollongong says a race of that scale would deliver significant tourism and economic benefits for the city.
The discussion follows Wollongong’s successful hosting of global events, including the World Triathlon Championships and the UCI World Road Cycling Championships, which have helped build the city’s reputation on the world stage.
Destination Wollongong says it will continue working with stakeholders to pursue opportunities that deliver long term benefits for the region.
