Dangerous driving targeted in major Illawarra police blitz

Local police had dangerous driving in their sights over the weekend.

Operation Fume saw Wollongong and Lake Illawarra districts join forces for a ten hour blitz across the region from Saturday afternoon until the early hours of Sunday morning.

Eleven people were charged in total, with more than half for driving while suspended, disqualified, or cancelled.

One incident on Saturday saw a 28 year old man cop a traffic infringement notice after being spotted driving an unregistered car along Crown Street in Wollongong.

Another saw a red P-plater stopped in Cringila, with the 20 year old male driver found to only hold a learner’s licence. He’s been fined more than $1400 for not displaying the right plates, and for not being accompanied by a licensed driver.

More than 770 breath tests and 100 drug tests were carried out, with officers detecting 20 drink and drug driving offences.

One incident on Saturday saw a woman stopped on Stewart Street in Wollongong for an RBT, checks revealing the 44 year old’s licence was suspended, before a drug test allegedly returned a positive reading for meth.

Another in Keiraville saw a 46 year old man allegedly caught driving on an expired licence and under the influence of cocaine, after being pulled over on Bulwarra Street around 1am on Sunday.

Another incident of note saw a green P-plater lose her licence for six months, after allegedly being clocked doing 126km/h in a 60 zone along Lade Wakehurst Drive in Lilyvale.

The 21 year old’s also lost six demerit points and been fined more than $3000.
