The West Dapto Road upgrade has been put on hold following the discovery of a threatened species.
A colony of Southern Myotis microbats was uncovered during demolition works above a culvert between Shone Avenue and Rainbird Drive.
As a protected species, work cannot resume until the bats have moved on — with no fixed timeframe, particularly as they are known to hibernate through the colder months.
Wollongong City Council is now working with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water to implement a management plan.
The delay is expected to push the current road closure beyond the planned mid-2026 reopening.
