The Illawarra is set for a major transport and freight boost, with the NSW Government committing $270 million to upgrade roads and transport links across Wollongong and Port Kembla.
The investment is designed to strengthen the region as a key economic gateway for New South Wales, positioning Port Kembla at the centre of the state’s future trade and freight network.
The funding follows a decision to consolidate port operations at Bays West in Sydney, with bulk handling, including cement, gypsum and sugar, set to shift away from Glebe Island by 2030.
Those operations are expected to transition to Port Kembla, driving increased freight activity and future job opportunities in the Illawarra.
Wollongong MP Paul Scully says the package will help prepare the region for that growth, with upgrades planned for roads, freight links and surrounding transport infrastructure to support the port’s long term future.
The investment includes targeted road upgrades around Port Kembla, investigations into a new rail freight pathway, and builds on existing projects such as the Picton Road upgrade, improvements to the South Coast Rail Line, and the Mt Ousley Interchange.
The Minns Government says the package will support local jobs, back industry and unlock long term economic growth, ensuring the Illawarra is ready to seize its expanding role in the state’s freight and industrial future.
