Former NRL star Wendell Sailor has pleaded guilty to resisting police over a late-night incident on a busy Wollongong road.

The 51-year-old did not appear in Wollongong Local Court on Monday, where his lawyer entered a guilty plea on his behalf.

The charge relates to an incident in early December, when police were called to the area of Throsby Drive near Campbell Street following reports of a man allegedly yelling and standing in the middle of the road late at night.

Police allege Sailor resisted officers as they attempted to arrest him. He was taken into custody and later charged.

A separate charge of wilfully preventing the free passage of traffic has been withdrawn.

Sailor, a former St George Illawarra Dragons player and dual-code international, is due to be sentenced in Sydney next month, with the matter still under negotiation.
