At first glance, the Smashing Pumpkins song Today is a cheerful piece about the greatest day ever known.
But underneath the surface, things turn a little dark.
Lead singer, Billy Corgan was riding high on the success of the first Smashing Pumpkins album.
With success though comes a lot of life changes. And this lead Corgan into a depression that lasted around 8 months.
The pressure from the record company to complete their second album, Siamese Dream, didn't help the situation.
Whilst in this state, he wrote the lyrics to today. So when he says that Today is the greatest day, it's the opposite of how he was truly feeling.
Sometimes you need to dig a little deeper to know a song's true meaning.
Here's the Lyrics for Today by Smashing Pumpkins
Today is the greatest
Day I've ever known
Can't live for tomorrow
Tomorrow's much too long
I'll burn my eyes out
Before I get out
I wanted more
Than life could ever grant me
Bored by the chore
Of saving face
Today is the greatest
Day I've ever known
Can't wait for tomorrow
I might not have that long
I'll tear my heart out
Before I get out
Pink ribbon scars
That never forget
I tried so hard
To cleanse these regrets
My angel wings
Were bruised and restrained
My belly stings
Today is
Today is…
