A person has died in a house fire in Berkeley this afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to a home on Leicester Street, Berkeley, about 1.40pm, following reports of a fire.

A total of 10 Fire and Rescue NSW trucks and crews attended, arriving to find the home well alight.

Flames had spread to the roof, and there was a structural collapse.

The fire in the single-level, fibro home was extinguished and, following a search of the premises, a body was located inside the home.

The body is yet to be identified.

Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District have commenced an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the fire.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
