A man has been stabbed multiple times in Warilla this morning.

Police were called to Oldfield Street around 4.45am where they found a 40-year-old man with stab wounds to his head and back.

The victim was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Wollongong Hospital in a stable condition.

A police spokeswoman said a crime scene has been established and an investigation is underway.
