Wollongong arrest over Berkeley alleged offences

Police have charged a man following inquiries into an alleged break and enter and domestic violence-related offences in the Illawarra last month.

About 8am on Thursday 30 December 2021, police were called to a home at Nolan Street, Berkeley, following reports a man had allegedly forced entry and attacked two women – known to him – with an axe.

The man then fled the scene.

The women attended Wollongong Hospital for treatment to serious injuries. They have since been released.

Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District were notified and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Following inquiries, local police, together with South East Region Enforcement Squad (RES), attended a unit on Campbell Street, Wollongong, about 4pm yesterday (Thursday 13 January 2022).

Officers arrested a 24-year-old man found hiding under a bed.

He was taken to Wollongong Police Station and charged with an outstanding warrant for domestic violence-related offences, and 10 offences including; three counts of resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, common assault, aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence – armed, and, destroy or damage property.

The man was refused bail and is due to appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Friday 14 January 2022).

Inquiries into the incident are continuing.
