Charges after firearm seized from Unanderra vehicle

Police have charged a man after a firearm and ammunition were located inside a vehicle at Unanderra yesterday.

About 6pm on Wednesday (12 January 2022), officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police were patrolling the Unanderra area, when they approached the driver of a Toyota Hiace in the carpark of a fast-food restaurant along the Princes Highway.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police seized a .22 calibre revolver in a brown paper bag behind the driver’s seat, as well as ammunition.

The driver – a 31-year-old man, and passenger – a 24-year-old man, were arrested and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station.

The older man was charged with possess unauthorised pistol, possess unregistered firearm – pistol, and possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority.

The Wollongong was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Thursday 13 January 2022).

The younger man was released pending further inquiries.
