Housing Trust calls for affordable rental housing

Illawarra based not for profit The Housing Trust, has launched their 'Homes4LocalHeroes' campaign, putting council election candidates on notice.

Today marks exactly 50 days until voters in Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama and Shoalhaven go to the polls in their local council elections, The Housing Trust is calling on every candidate to put affordable rental housing at the top of their policy priority list.

“We have been underwhelmed by the performance of most of our Councils during the present term and we’re putting anyone who plans to stand for election on 4 December on notice,” Housing Trust CEO, Michele Adair said.

“Frankly, if anyone who is planning to stand for election doesn’t have the housing crisis top of mind and isn’t willing to be a part of the solution, they shouldn’t be standing. We need local leaders looking after our local heroes.

‘Between now and election day we’ll rank the performances of the four Councils as they finish their current terms, and we’ll offer all candidates briefings on the crisis and what they can do to fix it.

We’ll also provide information for the voting public so they can ask the candidates questions, we want everyone to know how dire the situation currently is. In the days immediately before the election we’ll provide a summary of the commitments given by each of the candidates and political parties so voters can make an informed choice.

“We want every candidate to commit to helping deliver on Housing Trust’s target of one in five new residential homes in the Illawarra being dedicated to affordable rental.”
