Residents of Wollongong are being encouraged to tune into the prestige event at the UCI Road World Championships in Flanders, Belgium, on Sunday for a taste of what will be “the ride of our lives”.
One of Wollongong’s leading cycling identities is urging the community to watch the elite men’s and women’s road races across the weekend to see what the region can expect when the world titles come to Wollongong in 2022 in just 12 short months.
The elite men’s road race is one of the world’s biggest cycling events and will be held on Sunday night (AEST).
Destination Wollongong board member and former top cyclist Simon Kersten said viewers will get a good insight into what we can expect next year.
"This is a true festival and the atmosphere will be literally going off,” Mr Kersten said.
“People need to understand what a carnival it will be and the proximity you get to these athletes, you are basically on the pitch with them. It goes nuts.
“For everyone in Wollongong we should realise this is very real for us and be aware this is what we are about to experience.”
