A person who was evacuated from a Wollongong apartment building during a unit fire earlier this week has tested positive for Coronavirus.

Approximately 300 people were evacuated from the complex on Gladstone Avenue around 6.30pm on Monday night with many spotted without masks as they poured out onto the footpath.

Illawarra Strata Management has notified residents of the positive case.

"We are informed the positive cases did attend the evacuation point on Monday night, being 6th September 2021, therefore is is highly likely you may be considered a casual contact," the communication said.

"We suggest that you get tested for COVID-19 and self-isolate until you receive a negative result.

"At this stage we have not been contacted formally by NSW Health," the notice said.

It is not known exactly how many people from the complex have tested positive but information given to Wave FM indicates it is more than one.

A unit on level four suffered substantial damage in the fire with a 71-year-old woman requiring treatment at Wollongong Hospital.
