Kiama Council kicks off major upgrades

Kiama Council has begun upgrading a number of highly used but informal car parks to improve access and reduce traffic and road safety risks.

Council is investing more than $600,000 to upgrade the car parks, as well as widening roads, in 2021.

The locations take into account factors such as usage levels and community feedback.

The locations are:

  • Bonaira Oval carpark
  • Kiama Downs Surf Club carpark
  • Kendalls Beach carpark
  • Shoalhaven Street carpark
  • Glenbrook Drive road

Council has appointed J.B.G Civil Pty Ltd to conduct the upgrades, with work already underway at several sites.

This includes the Kiama Downs Surf Life Saving Club carpark, which see the informal car park opposite the Club house formed into 52 car spaces in two stages.

Work on the informal car park at Kendalls Beach is also underway, to provide beach-goers with 19 formal car spaces, and improved access for adjacent property owners.

Similarly, a start has been made at Bonaira Oval carpark, which will provide 47 car spaces to support the new clubhouse and amenities built by the Kiama Power AFL Club. This will also service the Kiama Bridge Club, as well as other sports that make use of the Oval. It will also help with the congestion on surrounding streets when sport is being played.

The upgrades will also provide improved access and parking on Shoalhaven Street for Kiama Pre-School and Kiama High School. This includes 19 formal car spaces, as well as an access ramp and staircase to the Pre-School.

Finally, our contractors will be widening a section of Glenbrook Drive in Kiama to support access to a new subdivision.

The upgrades are expected to be completed before the end of 2021.

Council is funding these works with additional support from the NSW Government through its Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Grant program.
