Dapto - arrests after armed robbery

A man and teenage boy have been charged following an investigation into an armed robbery at Dapto last week.

About 3am on Thursday 7 January 2021, police were called to a skatepark on Bong Bong Road, Dapto, following reports of a robbery. Police have been told two men – aged 22 and 30 – were standing outside a black Holden Captiva for a pre-arranged meeting, while a third man, aged 24, remained inside the car.

It’s alleged a 17-year-old boy armed with a firearm approached the car, before threatening the 24-year-old man and stealing the Holden in the company of a fifth man. It’s further alleged the 22-year-old man produced a pistol, and further threatened the 24-year-old and 30-year-old men, before stealing a mobile phone and fleeing in a white Toyota Corolla.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation, including inquiries into reports shots were fired during the incident. There were no reported injuries.

A black Holden Captiva was seized from a park in Berkeley for forensic examination on Thursday 7 January 2020. Following extensive inquiries, a 17-year-old boy was arrested in Haywards Bay about 3.30pm last Friday (8 January 2021). A short time later, two search warrants were executed at homes in Unanderra and Haywards Bay.

The teen was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station and charged with robbery while armed with dangerous weapon and be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner. He was refused bail and appeared in a children’s court on Saturday 9 January 2021, where he was formally refused bail to reappear in a children’s court on Tuesday 19 January 2021.

Following further inquiries, a 22-year-old man was arrested at a home in Unanderra about 7pm yesterday (Tuesday 12 January 2021). The man was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he was charged with robbery while armed with dangerous weapon. He was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Wednesday 13 January 2021).
