The Wollongong Wolves season is over after going down to Sydney United 3-1 in the NSW National Premier League semi final at Albert Butler Park.

It's the second year in a row that Luke Wilkshire's men have fallen to United in the semi's.

The visitors took a 1-nil lead in the 15th minute before Marcus Beattie levelled for the Wolves.

Tensions then boiled over in the 38th minute with the game exploding into chaos after dirty play off the ball by United's Patrick Antelmi and Wollongong’s Thomas James caused an all in-brawl.

The moment of madness proved costly for both sides with referee Michael Weiner brandishing a straight red card for both strikers that reduced the two teams to ten-men going into the interval.

The visitors scored again in the 74th minute before sealing the 3-1 victory with a late goal.

Sydney United will now meet premiers Rockdale Illinden in the decider after they rolled Sydney Olympic 3-nil.
