St George Illawarra's training field at the WIN Stadium precinct won't be turned into a commercial hotel after Labor had a win in the NSW Upper House.
The opposition won a battle to protect key sporting grounds from developers by successfully amending the Sporting Venues Authorities Bill which not only threatened Wollongong's Number 2 Oval but a number of other grounds.
Changes proposed by the Berejiklian Government would have allowed the Minister for Sport, at the stroke of a pen be able to approve the development of a commercial hotel on the field beside WIN Stadium, the construction of serviced apartments on Western Sydney Stadium, widespread residential development across the Newcastle Sporting Precinct while it would also have opened up development around the Sydney Cricket Ground.
The decision means the current provision remains, requiring the Government to bring any proposal for residential or commercial hotel development on Venues land back to the Parliament.
