Member for Shellharbour Anna Watson, has called for a 'temporary moratorium', be placed on cockle fishing in the Illawarra.

Ms Watson says there needs to be greater fines for over harvesting, and a moratorium placed on fishing in Lake Illawarra for two years, saying she has witnessed first-hand, an instance where NSW Police had to be called, to stop the over harvesting of cockles.

Ms Watson has made the call in NSW Parliament today, adding that her office has been contacted by a number of concerned residents who think not enough is being done to protect the Lake Illawarra ecosystem.
