Lake Illawarra Police are warning of a new scam.

Victims are being contacted by a person claiming to be from Service NSW and being told that their tax file number has been used for money laundering.

Police said the scammer then transfers the victim to law enforcement who advise them to change their tax file number.

The victim then receives several calls from Crime Stoppers displaying the correct number that appears to have been spoofed.

Police said that the practice is not protocol and are advising people not to engage.
