Police find man with explosives on Wollongong train

A man faces Wollongong Court today after he was found to have explosives yesterday.

About 4pm Thursday, officers from the Wollongong Police Transport Command spoke with a man travelling between Port Kembla and Wollongong, in relation to travelling without a valid ticket, they then discovered the 35-year-old man was wanted for breaching bail. When they searched the man at Wollongong railway station, they found a container with an explosive label and a fuse sticking out, in the bag the man was carrying, they also located a small quantity of drugs.

Police established an exclusion zone around the bag and the Police Rescue Squad attended to examine the container. A number of railway detonators were found, and the device was rendered inoperable. The man faces a number of charges, he was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court today, this is not being treated as a terrorism related offence.
