A number of Philadelphia police officers have been shot during a shootout and standoff with a gunman.

The incident has been described as "active and ongoing" in the north of the city.

Philadelphia Police Sgt. Eric Gripp tweeted there was at least one suspect firing at police officers in the city's Nicetown neighbourhood.

It is believed six officers have been wounded.

A massive police presence has gathered in the neighbourhood with dozens of police cars and officers, many of them with their guns drawn.

Gunshots are continuing to be heard.

One injured officer was reportedly taken away in a police car.
