Smyth climbs the leaderboard in Texas

Illawarra pro golfer Travis Smyth needs a strong finish in tonight's final round of the Tour School qualifying tournament in Texas to have any chance of progressing to the second stage.

Smyth is aiming to add a Tour card to his credentials following a solid rookie year on the Asian Golf Tour.

The Tour is the level directly under the US PGA Tour.

The 23-year-old picked up a shot in the third round at The Woodlands to be at two-over the card.

He produced his best round of the week so far with three birdies and two bogeys to climb into a share for 36th on the leaderboard.

Smyth needs to finish in the top 22 plus ties to earn a start in the second stage of qualifying.

The magic mark at the completion of the third round is three-under the card.
