One of the trees that gives FIGTREE its name is being cut down by Wollongong City Council.
The council says the decades-old Fig near the Hellenic Club on the Princes Highway lost a key structural limb during the storms in March and it's now considered unsafe to pedestrians and motorists.
The council says it worked with experts to see if the tree could remain, however it was found to be in significant decline and it was recommended that it be taken out.
Traffic control is in place both today and tomorrow between 9.30am and 3pm, to allow the work to be carried out.
