On Sunday, emergency services were called to Wollongong City beach about 4.30pm, following reports four children were in trouble in the water.

Their father managed to assist his two younger children without assistance, however the two older children aged 10 and 12 became caught in a rip.

Many others including an off-duty paramedic and two surfers went to save them, also 32 year old Shaun Oliver entered the water to help, but after reaching one of the distressed kids, he ended up being caught in a rip and was swept out to sea.

Shaun (from Victoria) was then saved and taken to Wollongong Hospital, but sadly, he passed away.

This morning Mel & Trav spoke to one of the surfers, 22 year old Tom Parkinson, about the ordeal.

Shaun Oliver has been hailed as a hero, but sadly his own family now are without a father and husband, you can help his family out at the GoFUndMe page that has been set up.
