Calls for St Hilliers Investigation
There are calls for the Federal Government to investigate construction company St Hilliers after it went into voluntary administration yesterday. Earlier this year the company was handed 25 million-dollars from the State Government to finish public housing projects - in areas including Warrawong, Tarrawanna and Towradgi. Minister For The Illawarra GREG PEARCE believes the company may be trying to avoid its liabilities on a Victorian jail project and should be investigated for breaches of corporations law. A number of local sub-contractors have been left out of pocket and Mr PEARCE says St Hilliers needs to be held accountable. Meantime member for Kiama GARETH WARD... Read more
Teachers Strike to Go Ahead
The NEW SOUTH WALES Teachers Federation will go ahead with strike action tomorrow. Public school teachers across the Illawarra will stop work from 9 until 11am. The Federation Executive has made the decision despite a call from the STATE Government for the meeting to be moved out of school hours. GREG PRIOR from the Education Department says while most schools will have some supervision, parents in the illawarra should check what arrangements will be in place. {play}images/audio/teachers12.mp3{/play} Read more
Illawarra Sub-Contractors Hit Again
There have been calls today for the state government to step in, and this time do the right thing by Illawarra sub-contractors, again caught up in the collapse of a government appointed building firm. After the collapse of PERLE last year, sub-contractors were left hundreds-of-thousands-of-dollars out of pocket, while public housing projects remained at a standstill. The new Liberal government appointed St Hilliers to finish those projects, but now it too has gone into administration and Illawarra subbies have taken the hit yet again. MICK LANE from the CFMEU says the government has to step in to fix the debacle. {play}images/audio/Mick2.mp3{/play} Read more
